Wednesday's Digressions

  • A female Mexican co worker and I pretty frequently trade jabs with each other in Spanish and English. Recently a supervisor walked up in the middle of the following exchange, "If you weren't so dumb you would have known! Well, if you weren't so mean- you would have told me!" All she could say was,"Ya'll make me nervous. I don't know when you're kidding or serious? Are you being serious?"

  • Sometimes we have to tell people they're HIV positive for the first time. It's sad when a 6 foot+ 200 lb muscled up man asks,"Can I use your restroom back here for a minute? I don't want my ride to see me like this." and you can just hear him in there sobbing- his heart breaking.

  • Sad.

  • I have never, nor would I ever go to a casino. What a ridiculous waste.

  • Well, I would go to a show at one- they're cheap, clean and my guess is, access is better than other venues.

  • I heard some new Evanessence today- pretty bad.

  • A few of us at work are growing beards. I'll probably let it go a week or two and tire of looking like a derelict and shave it off with extreme prejudice.

  • If this country had any sense we'd make our air transport safety system the model of efficiency and effectiveness, make laws to protect the safety (and gain the confidence) of visitors and start taking the money of more tourists. It doesn't seem like we want to build things to sell- maybe we could sell our hospitality and sights.

  • Have you ever wanted to be Naked And Famous?

I like being invisible from time to time. =)

AIDS news...that's just so sad....

Casinos: [blech] I'm with you! Was ferried to one in my 20s (under false pretenses) and found it to be a depressing scene.

K- We do get to also be the ones who plug them into services, monitor and treat their associated diseases. We can't undo what happened, but it's nice to help them get their feet back under them in some ways. Also- we deal with it so much we as people, may be one of the few they meet who don't judge them and understand.
Casinos: I. Do. Not. Get. It. People who are into them have something broken in them.
It's good hearing from you.

I have never had the gambling gene.

Years ago, on a business trip to LV, I played some nickel slots as I walked from casino to casino along the strip (and back to my hotel) taking in the sights - but even so, I stopped while I was about dead even or maybe a couple dollars ahead. If I knew how to count cards and had a confidence I could do it well, I could maybe have a slight interest, but it's never been strong enough to cause me to learn it.

Used to buy a lottery ticket occasionally - just one at a time - as the single purchase increased my winning odds infinitely. Any money expended beyond that is simply a linear function. The fact that over a multi-year horizon I'd spent over a hundred dollars or so and won only $3 kinda crystallized my understanding of the subject.

Anyone game? We have to go to Austin the next morning for Thanksgiving, but damn I sure want to see this concert!

Casino shows are not cheap. They may have been in the past, but you have to shell it out to get tickets to a good show in Vegas these days.

Casinos are not for the unfamiliar gambler. Blackjack tables often use 4 or 5 decks so counting cards is near impossible unless your Rainman. Slots are a guaranteed losing bet.

I play 3 games. Poker, Craps and Baccarat. I can control my fate somewhat in poker. Craps and baccarat have the lowest percentage for the house.
