Friday's Dispatch

  • "The problem is money. The expert panel estimates it would cost about $3 billion a year beyond NASA’s current budget." From msnbc article on problems with plans for manned return to moon by 2020.
  • Thank God- the idea of a manned return to the moon was absolutely retarded..
  • But, Kevin we need the helium and minerals from the moon for research! you say. Fine, trick the Russkies or Chi-Comms into going and buy whatever we want from them.
  • Guess who is going to Willie Nelsons Fourth of July Picnic?
  • It may not last forever (even our individual forevers) but what a little life FG and I have built from nothing.
  • Bing search engine is pretty, intuitive, fast and uncluttered. The front page wallpaper is always gorgeous and sometimes funny. Recently there was a gif of a songbird singing. As it opens it mouth instead of a birdsong, operatic music comes out but that is the only time sound has ever defaulted in as I pulled the page up.
  • Remember when everybody had music tied to their pages and invariably it was way louder than whatever you had on before and you would have a myocardial infarction as the obnoxious sound blasted out at you at 2 AM?
  • A minute ago (04/10/2014 @0010) I read an article about a Yale student who was supposedly hassled by the campus health about her low weight and being bullied into gaining which led her to binge on junk food. The article used that vignette to rant about how archaic the BMI is as a body measuring tool. She was underweight- and that is not healthy. The BMI is old yes- it was devised in the 1800s but it gives you an idea of a desirable average which is harder to argue with than you are too fat or you are too skinny. Whether that lady had an eating disorder (which the university staff supposedly assumed) the fact is she was too skinny at 5'2" and 92 pounds. A simple flu could kill her very dead and quite quickly as she would have no reserves whatsoever.
  • An unspoken component to the previously mentioned story: we all have to have an affliction, disorder, syndrome, disease, disability or something and everything wrong with us is traceable back to one of those things.
  • I'm sorry Ms Jackson- I never meant to make your daughter cry.

Half the people over on tumblr STILL have music tied to their opening of their page. Since I typically have music playing low at work, I just don't go to tumblr pages at work anymore.

Of course, in light of the fact that most tumblrs also have a constant stream of pornographic images, this is probably a good policy anyway.
