On This Day

in 1785 Adm. Oliver Hazard Perry hero of the War of 1812 was born. Adm. Perry was famous for reporting to his command,"We have met the enemy and he is ours". The battle that he was was referring to was a naval engagement on Lake Erie which seems strange to me in a way- I know the Great Lakes are huge and there are still giant commercial ships navigating them but, when yor reference point for a lake is Lake Bridgeport TX I guess I should be forgiven. During the battle when his flagship was destroyed he simply boarded another ship, flagged it and continued the battle.
