This Day

started with Dwight Yoakum, GG Allin, Flaco Jimenez and Warren Zevon. Zevon and  Letterman were very good friends. In fact Zevon's last performance was on the show. After the show he gave Letterman his guitar and the world a great quote. When Letterman who knew Zevon was dying  asked Zevon what he knew now about life and death Zevon replied, Enjoy every sandwich.

Take it away Warren with Knocking On Heaven's Door.

Not any one of Zevon's iconic photos- but my favorite.

It is sort of impressive how many of the greats went on Letterman again and again, sort of exclusively. Or if not the greats per se, my faves.

Even guys like Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart who didn't live anywhere close to NYC chose Letterman as their network forum of choice.

Lou reed was on Letterman a lot, too. I don't know when the last time was.

Zevon had advanced notice that he was on a timeline, of course, and he did a good job at wrapping up his public life.

Hasten Down the Wind is definitely my favorite Ronstadt album, and probably favorite Ronstadt song.
