Monday's Missives

  • One of my new favorite foods are Nissin Chow Mein noodles. They are good and cheap with spicy chicken being my favorite. I carry a couple in my backpack (they are very light) so I always have something.
  • Another new favorite: Arby's Chicken Salad Sandwich.
  • Arbys reminds me of a person who goes out and gets plastered on cheap fortified wines once a year- why do we do things like that to ourselves?
  • Chicken Express is supposed to have some pretty good catfish.
  • Is there anything better than Chicken Express tea?
  • Have there ever been Po Folks restaurants in Texas?
  • Another place with epic sweet tea.
  • I like having friends who don't care what they eat so we can sometimes glunk out on good (or bad) foods together.
  • There was a restaurant in Weatherford TX called Goodnight Cattle Company Steakhouse (I think that's right anyway) man, it was great. They served grilled asparagus that came out as 10-12 inch stalks.
  • The owner has been accused of burning one of his other stores for the insurance money.
  • I'm thinking he's wishing for a do over.
  • My last patient died with me holding her hand. Her husband had to leave the room when I told him she only had minutes left and pulled a chair up to her bedside for him to be with her as she died. He said,"I can't take it. I don't want to be here for that. I'll be on the porch."
  • I have no idea how many people have died with me holding their hand.

Mondays Missives

  • I was in my twenties before I ate KFC, watched The Wizard Of Oz or fell in love.

  • There are very few foods I cannot stand but, celery is way up toward the top of the list.

  • There was a girl who was hired as a temp. where I worked who lived in a government apartment in the ghetto. She was nice, honest and a hard worker but, limited I thought in her world view in that everything she knew about society seemed to come from television and her mother and grandmother who had lived in the same apartments their entire lives. I remember giving her a ride home so she would not have to ride the bus or worse- walk home. The instruction she gave as I left her have always stuck with me: "Don't stop for anything on your way out, not even stop signs and don't look at anybody and somebody tries to make you stop- they ain't up to no good- run over them."

  • I could not believe how much she had to pay for the dump she was in after she got a job. I found her a house in a suburban town where she paid cheaper rent and her kids got to go to a decent school.

  • Getting the motorcycle fever again- this can't lead to anything good.

  • While the world is big enough for all of us and I like all kinds of bikes and respect the effort that goes into the different types of customs- you don't want to get me started on the Harley V Metric debate.

Saturday Food Thoughts

  • Two most memorable recent meals and other food thoughts:

  • Took a friend out to a fancy pants steak house when he came through town recently. It was so good I didn't want it to end. Garlic potatoes and foot long grilled asparagus to go with a beautiful inch and a half thick steak, I'm drooling- better stop thinking about that one.

  • Made tuna salad out of lemon pepper tuna and diced apples and real mayo today. Ate with a Hamburger Helper single serve and drank a Jones Soda Cream Soda. Very simple, very good.
  • I ate supper on the porch this evening.
  • I've eaten meals in a bath before.
  • One of my friends when the subject came up of weird habits said,"I like to eat supper on the toilet sometimes, not like a full meal but, a burrito or something like that."- I don't think I would have told that one brother. (maybe I shouldn't have told that one myself?)
  • When you have baby carrots and Ranch Dressing grind peppercorns into the dressing.
  • I decided a while back to dedicate myself to becoming a grillologist and have come a long way. While not perfected, I can cook a pretty mean steak and burger.
  • For a good burger dice an onion, coat it in a olive oil and mix a good amount of them throughout the hamburger and form patties. Sprinkle a little sea salt, a lot of fresh ground black pepper, some Worcestershire sauce and any creole type seasoning that doesn't have salt on the patties. Saute the remaining onions with some mushrooms timing them for about the time the burgers are done.

  • When someone goes on about eating some exotic or gross food in their past (baloot and calf testicles are two examples) I always think to myself they wouldn't have touched that stuff with a ten foot pole if they didn't have an audience present at the time for peer pressure.
