Monday's Missives

  • If you wonder why Rush Limbaugh is such a big deal it would help to understand the context in which he got big in the first place. For 30-50 years broadcast news readers could and would say whatever they wanted to disparage a conservative and/or promote a more liberal agenda regardless of what they were discussing. We just didn't hear anything from a conservative standpoint without really digging and looking. President Reagan could be at a Girl Scouts meeting and say to the crowd, I am an animal lover who believes in  helping poor people but the best way to help is to have a good economy so those who want to work can do so as a rising tide raises all the ships.  I also believe in a strong military to protect us and our interests. Dan Rather or Peter Jennings would come out and say, President Reagan while raping a goat at a Ku Klux Klan gathering said if it was up to him any poor people who don't want to work would be forced into the ocean by the US Army. Honestly, you would not believe how bad it was if you didn't live then or dig for the truth a little yourself..
  • The Marines have been ordered to change their cover (uniform hat) for the dress uniform. Some people have attempted to be pejorative and start a false argument over the proposed replacement by saying they look too, "girly". I don't know about that but they do look literally ridiculous.

  • I may be be the only person in some of my patients lives who has ever asked them about their future and really encouraged them to attend college.
  • For a while SYFY has been promising a lot of good, original CGI movies. There are a lot I suppose and they may be original and yes, they have CGI effects...
    FG: This was my granddads.
    Me: Cool.
FG: I bet it was expensive.
Me: Yeah, well its priceless to you. It reminds you of him and it was his- that is cool.
FG: I bet it cost at least 500 bucks. I mean look at all its got going on- a compass, fishing gear and sharpening stone!.
    Me Yeah.
FG: What do you mean- yeah? OK. But it was at least 100 bucks right?
Me: No, probably about ten dollars.
    FG: You don't know anything.

Blackcomb Mongoose. Bombproof (but heavy) frame and excellent components. They didn't catch on with serious mountain bikers so you can find them like new on CL often for about 150 bucks.

Wednesdays Digressions

See, clean, plentiful water IS sexy and way more interesting than hi speed rail, space travel and other daydreamy stuff!

  • Bea Arthur has died at 86 and Farrah Fawcett's publicist has been denying for weeks she is at deaths door.
  • Even the legends don't live forever.
  • Where were you when Dana Plato died?
  • I was in my little house in the country. The glass fell from my hand. I began to weep.
  • Well the first sentence is true.
  • Foi Gras has been banned in California in legislation that takes effect 2012. I don't know which is more ridiculous- eating or banning the stuff. Yes, I know what it is and how it's made.
  • Another thing that gets me: animals are still being killed and in some cases pushed to extinction for their body parts magical or supposed medicinal value- absolutely ridiculous. Good grief- it's 2009 AD not BC.
  • Susan Boyles has shaved her mustache.
  • My children were on their grandparents ranch for the weekend. Good for us all I know but, I missed them.
  • They were riding horses about as soon as they walked.
  • Ask them what they did this weekend and they will say,"Worked cattle with my grandad."
  • You'll picture them sitting on a fence rail or in a pickup for a little while watching cows walk by as they're processed.
  • They de-horn and castrate bulls, give vaccinations and brand all the animals.
  • My teenage son came in covered in blood, mud, doo-doo and animal hair. He saved a horn to mount on a knife blade.
  • He stunk to high heaven.
  • So proud.
  • The show Bones is always good and they often knock an episode out of the park.
  • The show Fringe is usually OK but, they can also kill- occasionally.
  • The shows Arrested Development and The Office? Just always very good- every episode, never tumultuous though.
  • We are going the other way in proposed infrastructure development. As I've said in the past- bridges are falling into rivers with people on them, entire regions were without water because of a drought recently, our electrical grid can't compete with anything more than a perfect spring day without threatening to collapse but, we're talking about going to the moon and Mars?
  • Crazy
  • Insane
  • Irresponsible
  • Now the President is going to push for a fast tracked multi gazillion, patrillion, quadrillion dollar high speed coast to coast rail system? The same system that I can assure you will be a government subsidized nightmare from groundbreaking- 'til death do us part.
  • Let's make sure we have drinking water first. Gigantic reservoirs of the stuff that break multiple records in multiple categories of The Guinness Book, that can be seen from space, that our children and grandchildren will play in, bathe with, drink and sell to countries that didn't have the foresight to take care of something so basic and get fantastically rich. Is that too much to ask? Or just not sexy enough?

Wonder What These Great Figures Think About Todays Politics?

Nothing, they are just stone representations of Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt and Lincoln but, the real ones would probably not be too surprised.

Jessica Alba's Hubby Talks Politics

"This was our first trip as a family," Cash writes. "As always, we arrived at the airport way too close to our departure time so it was hectic. It's always nerve wracking for new parents to fly with their child because you never know if you're going to ruin everyone else's flight with a screaming baby. (To date, Honor has been a great baby. Rarely crying. Opting to express herself through simple Haikus or interpretive dance instead...Yeah right. My girl's got opinions. Lol.)"

Cash describes listening to Bill Clinton speak "like seeing a HOF (Hall of Fame) athlete return to their sport."

I believe the basic idea is, he tries to be polite on airplanes, he has a good baby and he digs Bill Clinton.

We'll Believe

whatever we want to believe. A case in point from a comments section of a Newsweek blog.

"I am surprised that James Carville could be married to a lying, piece of garbage like Mary Matalin. When a person engages in outright lies, I lose all respect for them. Their credibility is nil. To be married to a liar whose is unattractive as well must be tortuous."

A Matalin fan could/would say exactly the same things- just switch the names around.
