Been in Galveston for past few days. Meant to put something up here before I left or even post from down there- neither worked out like I thought. If you click on the link you'll see a cornucopia of corny country music video but, also hear a good old classic country music song. If you've spent a lot of time there as I have and love it as I do, it's moving to see 40 year old footage and be reminded of things that are sadly changed and others that are nearly timeless. The Flagship Hotel (the one in the first of video jutting out into Gulf) looks a near total loss. The Galveston Fishing Pier also shown is gone. Only pelicans fish from it now. The beach house where my sister was married is gone. Everyone on the beach cheered them that day. The neighbors in the amazing three story house next door gave them champagne that night. Their house is gone also.
- I did see dolphins for the first time on this trip.
- They looked delicious.
- Took three or four hundred pictures will get some up soon.
- Tired- nap now.

CK-- I know what you mean. Back after the hurricane, I worked down there. Much like a war scene, there was nothing and no one but survivers. No power, no lights. I have some pix on me older blog. I rode out the storm just north of Houston then treked onward. It was a gut felt pain. The people were and still great. Boliver Island -- wiped from existance.Shame on the media for the lack of coverage. Hope you had/having fun.Sharky
I was fortunate to take the kids to Galveston on Spring Break '08. We had a ball.
My uncle & aunt rented a house on Crystal Beach for a week in July - invited me to come and join them and my cousins, but I couldn't make it. A week after they left, so did the house...
I generally like Galveston in Feb/Mar and Oct/Nov, hope to go this fall, or even during Dickens on the Strand, if that tradition survived.
I was bummed to hear about the Balinese Room - that was a neat place. I remember having dinner out there during a storm once(my own spring break in '79) - pretty awesome.
sharkster- thats right i remember some of your posts and pics. also, you're right about the coverage issue- why i wonder? they had a point set up to collect cars destroyed on Bolivar Pen. and still haven't finished!
don- Crystal Beach still beautiful. Dickens On The Strand is supposed to carry on and i'm sure it will. i wan to not only go but, dress for the occasion once. it was very lively everywhere we went- even on monday.
PS don- the beach my sis got married on was Crystal Beach. really hit her hard and was hard to hear her when she realised her honeymoon house was gone but, probably worse when she saw the empty pad where the people lived who gave them the champagne.
I have family in League City and Dickinson. Their homes were not touched in the hurricane.
BTW - I have been on cruises with Carnival, Royal Carribean, and Princess. I didn't really like Princess because the cruise attracted a very mature (Grandma crowd) type of folks. The other two were great.
I saw a five day cruise out of New Orleans for $269.
I have taken the while family on a cruise. My older kids loved it. My daughter met a bunch of new friends in kids camp.
Dicckens on the strand did and will carry on. They never missed a step. It was a little smaller and all the shops weren't open on the strand but the spirit lives on.
The coverage was very light because the people of Galveston and the Bolivar area wanted it that way. They didn't want all of their lives to end up being seen over and over like the victims of Katrina. The mayor of Galveston spoke out to protect her people. The people of Texas have also made a point that "we take care of our own". This has been true of the victims of Ike.
Many good times can be remembered at the Flagship and other landmarks in Galveston. The thing to do now is build new memories! Galveston needs up to support them with our presence and tourism.
So glad that you had a good time of rest and renewal with your family.

The news of Galveston makes me sad because Husband and I really enjoyed our times there. So sad to know so much old architecture and old landmarks have vanished.
